This magnificent work of art by Claude Mellan (23 May 1598 – 9 March 1688) is astonishing for its complex use of a single line. It starts on Jesus’s nose and spirals out to the edge of the image. It relies on varying thickness of the line, which is Mellan’ own engraving techniques.
